Board games that are available at The Library

Libraries have changed a lot over the last several decades: community engagement is much more important, offering services and outreach has become a large part of library services, and online resources have been added to book lending.  Libraries also have started offering a more varied collection, not just in book content but in types of materials. One thing members are often surprised (and usually delighted) to learn that the Dauphin County Library System lends out are board games and puzzles.

Whether you are looking to play with your family, a large group, or just enjoying some alone time, we have lots of options.

If you remember the classics fondly and don’t mind some familial antagonism, some options available are:

The Game of Life

Monopoly

Jenga

Dutch Blitz

Chess

Chess Board

Perhaps instead you wish for some quiet time to yourself that exercises your brain. Some of these can be played with others, but if you are looking for a solo board game experience, these are some great options:

Sudoku

Cottage Garden

Noctiluca

Friday

IQ Puzzler pro

Alternatively, you might be having some friends over or having a family get-together. For those occasions, we have a good selection of large group/ party games:

Sushi Go Party

Codenames

One night ultimate vampire

In addition to board games, we also have a variety of puzzles! Regardless of the group size, this is a great option, and DCLS has a plethora to choose from. Did you know that regularly doing puzzles has been linked to better memory, lower stress, and higher productivity?

Some of my favorites include wooden puzzles like this one, and some very book-ish ones. I usually like to go for puzzles with fewer than 500 pieces, but there are options ranging from 60- 1000 depending on your preference.

So next time you’re in one of the Library branches, why not peruse the collection and get playing!
