Press release body copy:

HARRISBURG, Pa.— Nominations for The Library’s Sara Haldeman Haly Awards are now being accepted. These awards are presented each year to individuals who have made significant contributions in the areas of literacy and education in the community and to organizations that strive to improve library service in the community by partnering with The Library.

These awards, celebrating service excellence, have been named in honor of Sara Haldeman Haly who in 1896 made a gift to our community that still serves as a beacon of learning today. In her will, she provided the funds needed to establish a public library for Harrisburg. Four years later her estate’s executors honored her vision by donating the plot of land at Front and Walnut streets that had been Sara’s garden for the building of a new library in her memory. Opened on January 1, 1914, the building has been in continuous operation as a library ever since. Over the years, many people have picked up the torch lit by Sara and have expanded her little garden into a library system that now serves more than 221,000 residents of Dauphin County. These awards were established in Sara’s name to honor those who give of their time, energy and resources to make learning available to everyone.

Nominations are open to the public. Following are the three awards that are presented each year with the basic criteria to be considered:

Person of the Year Award: An individual who has made a critical contribution to the community in support of the goals of The Library mission, which include education, literacy, lifelong learning and encouraging an informed and active citizenry.

Organization of the Year Award: An organization that has partnered with The Library to produce a significant improvement or extension of library service in our community.

Catalyst Award: A person or group who has had a significant positive impact on the provision of public library service within Dauphin County or the state.

The deadline for submitting nominations is January 15, 2012. To submit a nomination go to dcls.org and click on the Haly Awards Nominations Link or pick up and submit a nomination at any of the eight DCLS libraries.

The 2011 award recipients will be recognized at The Library’s Annual Light the Way to Learning Banquet, which will be held during National Library Week on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at Sheraton Harrisburg Hershey Hotel.
