This book is simply a must read for anyone who loves Fantasy and Romance. Romance being used in the older sense of say Shakespeare's The Tempest or the Arthurian Romances. This book follows Anodos as he travels through faerie land, and while this may sound trite or simple, I assure you the story is anything but either of those things. George MacDonald weaves a beautiful tale that may leave you speechless the first time you read it. This is my second time reading it, and I must say I think I understand more of what Macdonald was trying to say and do with this book. It definitely needs to be read multiple times. The first time so that you can experience it and be submerged in a book so beautiful it defies any analysis, the second, third, forth, ect. so that you can glean even more from its pages and continue to revel in the words, the story, and find new meanings and layers of brilliant story telling and thoughtfulness, beauty, truth, and ideas on every page. This is one book that must be read to be truly experienced. If you love C.S. Lewis, Tolkien, Charles Williams, Chesterton, Lewis Carol, and many other writers in the area of Fantasy literature, you will love this great masterpiece by George MacDonald. I highly recommend it.
