One Book, Every Young Child Sponsorship
The Commonwealth of Pa.’s “One Book, Every Young Child” initiative provides a statewide opportunity to recognize and encourage early reading by selecting a title that all preschool age children can share. Childcares, libraries, schools, social service organizations, Head Start, and many other programs have picked up the mantle of this partnership between the Department of Education and the Department of Welfare. Books are being put in the hands of thousands of children in communities across the state.
This initiative reaches beyond a book into homes where children may have no books at all, to parents who may not know that reading early and often is crucial to future success, and to early care environments to give children a chance to have a shared experience that can then be duplicated at home. This also eases transition into Kindergarten, where children will encounter the same book.
The Library’s goal is to provide a copy of the book to all preschool aged children in Dauphin County, with a special focus on children at risk. The Office of Commonwealth Libraries aids us in this goal by providing copies of the book at just $2 each.
