“The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
–Dr. Seuss,
“I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!”
Young or old, there’s no doubt that reading is a key ingredient in “going places!” Study after study has shown the strong link between reading, vocabulary development and learning. And lack of access to books is one of the biggest stumbling blocks to success for many.
As your library, we recognize the need for access to computers and the explosive growth of information available via the web. But we also know that the journey to that point starts on a parent’s lap with a book in hand. Adults, too, find that many times they still just want to sit down with a good book, something DCLS library users did hundreds of thousands of times last year.
That’s why we’re asking for your help. Like computer technology and other resources, the cost of books continues to rise, presenting a challenge to a public library working with funding that does not keep pace.
We’d like you to buy the community a book! With your gift of $35 or more, about the cost to purchase and process the average hardbound book, you can make a significant difference in the size and quality of the collection of books in your public library. You can put a book in the hands of a child eager to read or one in the hands of an adult eager to learn.
And you’ll know that the next time you just want to sit down with something to read, whether it is Where’s Waldo? or the Wall Street Journal, you’ll be able to find it at your library.
Thank you for your generosity.
You're going places!
We hope one of them is your library.
